Report: EdTech Funding in Europe up 95% in Q1 2015

During the first quarter of 2015, edtech investments in Europe are up 95%, from €11.9 million to €23.2 million compared with Q1 2014.

The number of deals grew 72% from 12 to 19, the average amount invested in Q1 2015 was €1.5 million.

The strongest month was March with nine investments total, followed by February with eight, and January with two rounds.

London and Berlin lead the European Startup Scene

According to a study by EY published in German newspaper Die Welt, London is leading when it comes to VC investments in Europe. But that could change as Berlin is gaining ground rapidly.

EY took a look at investments between early 2013 and September 2014. In that period 187 tech startups in London raised investments, followed by Berlin with 145 venture rounds. Paris comes in third with 66 investments only, followed by Barcelona with 39 and Munich with 32 venture rounds. Overall, three German cities (Berlin, Munich and Hamburg) made it into EY’s top 15.

Bulgaria is Europe’s Silicon Valley

The Bulgarian information technology industry is one of the fastest growing industries in this country. Arguably, since the 1990s, the IT industry in this country has enjoyed consistent growth, only slowing down between 2008 and 2010 because of the global financial crisis. According to European Information Technology Observatory (EITO), the Bulgarian IT industry has been enjoying at a two-digit rate, and there are no signs that this growth will slow down anytime soon.

Startup Europe: European Commission wants to foster Web Talent through MOOCs

As part of its Startup Europe initiative, the European Commission announced the launch of a network of MOOC providers to foster regional web and app skills.

The network aims to map the demand for web-related skills across Europe and to promote the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for capacity-building in those fields.
