HEDLINE: McGraw-Hill Education invests €6 million in busuu

McGraw-Hill Education acquired a minority stake in London-based language learning startup busuu for €6 million.

busuu had previously raised capital from business angels Hansi Hansmann and Martin Varsavsky and a €3.5 million Series A led by PROfounders Capital.

As cross-dressing sensation Conchita Wurst belted out her Eurovision Song Contest-winning tune across a room filled with Europe’s hottest tech start-ups, I knew it could only mean one thing: the Europas annual awards evening had officially begun.  From Berlin came Babbel, who have become one of the world’s leading language learning platforms. Used in 190 countries, with over 25 million app downloads to date, they swept to victory in the education category in exuberant style. However Busuu, Babbel’s nearest rival both in market and geography, reached a staggering 50m users this year, proving that Europe has truly emerged as the home of social language learning.

Language Learning Community busuu surpasses 50 million users

The London-based language learning community busuu announced that it had surpassed another milestone with 50 million users from across the globe.

Founded in 2008 by Bernhard Niesner and Adrian Hilti, busuu is one of the leading language learning startups based around a global community and offering access to self-paced learning tools via web browser and mobile devices.
