HEDLINE: McGraw-Hill Education invests €6 million in busuu

McGraw-Hill Education acquired a minority stake in London-based language learning startup busuu for €6 million.

busuu had previously raised capital from business angels Hansi Hansmann and Martin Varsavsky and a €3.5 million Series A led by PROfounders Capital.

HEDLINE: Babbel raises $22 million Series C

Berlin-based language learning company Babbel announced that it closed a $22 million Series C, led by Scottish Equity Partners (SEP) with participation from existing investors Reed Elsevier Ventures, Nokia Growth Partners (NGP), and VC Fonds Technology Berlin, managed by IBB Bet.

Used in 190 countries, with over 25 million app downloads to date, they swept to victory in the education category in exuberant style. However Busuu, Babbel’s nearest rival both in market and geography, reached a staggering 50m users this year, proving that Europe has truly emerged as the home of social language learning.

Babbel opens Office in the United States

Berlin, Germany based language learning startup Babbel announced the opening of its first overseas office in New York. Babbel co-founder and President Thomas Holl will head operations in the United States.

The opening will mark Babbel’s official entry in the U.S. language learning market which started in March 2013 with the acquisition of PlaySay. PlaySay’s founder Ryan Meinzer joined Babbel as advisor for the U.S. market.
