Founded in 1997, the golden age of the “New Economy” in Germany, IBB Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH (IBB Bet) has helped 168 Berlin-based startups to raise €1 billion. IBB Bet invested €141 million, €865 million came from its network of business angels, strategic partners and international investors.

IBB Bet is the venture capital arm of the Investitionsbank Berlin and manages two VC funds: Technologie Berlin and Kreativwirtschaft Berlin.

According to IBB one tech startup is founded in Berlin every 20 hours. A recent study by EY puts Berlin in second place after London when it comes to European tech hubs and venture capital investment. EDUKWEST Europe tracked seven VC rounds for Berlin-based edtech startups in 2014, receiving an estimated total of around €10 million.

IBB Bet invested in two edtech startups, Babbel and sofatutor. Language learning platform Babbel has raised over €10 million in two rounds and just announced the opening of its first overseas office in New York with the goal to enter the US language learning market.

sofatutor, an after-school tutoring platform that offers self-paced video lessons and access to live tutors, has raised over €4 million in three rounds, the latest being a Series C in August 2014. The startup has since expanded into Austria and Switzerland.
